Representing the next generation of solar panel technology, the Solaris 26 maximizes performance while taking up virtually no space at all. The unit's multi-section design folds up into a compact footprint that's just a bit larger than a DVD case, while still delivering an impressive 26 watts of power, more than enough to charge a laptop or digital video camera or power a satellite or cell phone. In addition, the unit's high-performance CIGS solar cells--the most efficient thin-film solar technology available--are extremely reliable, with a design that instinctively converts incident sunlight into an electrical current, even in low-light conditions. The combined functions make this an ideal panel for camping trips, hikes, power outages, and other occasions when it helps to have a portable power source on hand. The Solaris 26, which measures 21.5 by 37.5 inches when open and 11 by 8.5 inches when folded, includes a battery clamp cable for charging car batteries, along with vehicle outlet and multi-linking cables. It's also backed by a one-year warranty. What's in the Box? Solaris 26 foldable solar panel, vehicle outlet cable, multi-linking cable, battery clamp cable, storage sack, user's manual.

Right now I use it to charge a all of my electronics. It folds up nicely, and doesn't weigh much. I agree with the other posters on the positive things about these panels. These panels as individuals (not linked) are serving me and my teams very well in Iraq. We use them to power everything from MP3 Players and cell phones to advanced GPS tracking systems. There's only one problem I have, and that is linking more than two panels together. The instructions and box say it can be done, and the box says it includes a linking cable, but there is nothing that says how. You are supposedly able to link up to three panels together, but I am unable to accomplish this no matter how I configure the cables. I've written directly to Brunton's service department for guidance, but after a month I've only gotten the read receipts from them. No answer so far. No one on any blog or forum can tell me how this is done. They are expensive, so finding someone that has bought more than one is rare. All three panels came with the exact same cables, so I don't think I'm missing anything. There are two connection ports on each panel (it will charge two small items at the same time). As far as cables go you get one with clamps (like the kind that connects to a car battery), one female car cigarette lighter-style outlet, and another cable that has four adapters on one end and a single adapter (for plugging into the panel) on the other. You have to use the four-ended cable to link panels. The problem is that when you plug the end with four ends into a panel there is no more room to plug in another cable. The two prongs sticking out of the sides prevent this. Anyone with one panel could see what I mean. Try plugging both ends of your linking cable into your one panel, as would be the case on the middle panel in a series of three. Then consider how you would link three of them together. I would love to hear from anyone that has accomplished linking more than two of these together. Linking them together would allow us to power (real time) our field laptops and mini-satellites, we could even recharge our military satcom radio batteries. Unfortunately this isn't the case yet. The panel is excellent and I like it a lot. I gave it a three star rating because it claims to be able to do something that it cannot (link three panels). The instructions are also lacking in this area. Brunton's customer service also leaves something to be desired, which should be your only negative consideration if you're buying only one. Update: I finally got a reply from Brunton concerning linking the panels. Here it is: "To your question... The four-pronged linking cable can make the connection between panels a bit tight. Admittedly, the design isn't the best, but I've got three of our 26s here, hooked them up, and read increased amperage. On the panels where you're forced to use both the single and multi-tipped wire, I've found it's best to turn the four-tip plug perpendicular to the flat ground, making it easier to fit the single wire. I'll be the first to say it isn't pretty. It creates a slight fold in the panel, and doesn't allow it to sit completely flat, but it does make the connection, and since there's no solar receiver over the output, it doesn't affect the efficiency. As I said, the multi-prong cord isn't the best design. It's something I'm trying to get them to change in the development department. Keep in mind that hooking multiple panels together doesn't increase the total voltage coming out of your last panel, but rather simply increases the amperage. " Update * Click on "See customer Image" underneath the main product pic to see what this looks like * So I broke out my panels and gave it a try. Yes, by bending the panel you can make the two fit. This causes me some real problems. My initial

OK for a high wattage B/U but extended times still require a genset By TL Bought this recently from Amazon for $180.00 I will say its worth about that. I tried a few high wattage things in it like a hair dryer, Iron, coffee maker, just to see how long I could use it. These are things I could never think of using in a standard 1500VA UPS, (Which I have for comp and such) All of the devices ran well, the hair dryer probably sucked it down the fastest, (Set high 1500watts), lasted aout 7 minutes before the warning started going off. The unit ran about 5 more minutes on medium setting before the battery dropped to 20 percent. The battery did recover to 50% after turning off dryer, so high wattage appliances I think are a bit much for the batteries to output continuously. The unit is heavy, about 60 pounds. For the money, I would buy again. I figure I should get about 6 hours on a computer with a flat panel attached. For most short power outages, this will get you by for a few necessities. Anything longer you will have to go generator. The description reads as though you can use it for a fridge and other high wattage appliances, which I guess is true, but misleading as I would imagine a fridge would kill it in about 10 minutes or less. All in all glad, I was able to purchase for the $180.00. If nothing else you can dry your hair when the power is out, and make coffee, without having to hook up the generator.UPDATE:So I wanted to update this review. The unit gave out after about 18-24 months. Cant tell exactly when it lost its capacity but it would last maybe 5 minutes on light load. I took the time to tear it apart and found three 12 volt 17ah SLA batteries wired in parallel. They were pretty much useless. Tried to bring them back but as most here know once an SLA battery gets near end of life it is almost impossible to get them back from the dead even with a good quality desulfator. I got lucky and found 3 new Panasonic replacements for $25ea on EBAY and installed those. (A good quality SLA battery in this range is usually about $70 bucks each). Unit is back up and running like new. I would assume most people would not attempt this nor probably should they. High risk of shock even with the unit unplugged. And many parts to disassemble/reassemble. If you do attempt, take lots of pictures as you break down and be carefull of wires. Doesnt matter how long or how many times you have handled electricity, only takes once. 27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Piece of Junk By Orientdrifter This item is a piece of junk. Mine gave up after a month, and it is not even used much, just lying in a corner being charged. What is worse, their customer service is more than a piece of junk too. They diagnosed the problem as a battery failure. Since this unit is heavy and I would have to spend over $50 to ship it, I requested that they just send me a new battery and I return the old one to them. But, no! they want the whole unit back. What happened to the customer is always right? And this item is not even worth $100, much less the stated price. For one, it wont hold a charge long, and it breaks easily. A small electric generator is a much, much better value. My advice to you, do not patronize anymore Duracell or Xantrex, their products are junk and their customer service a joke. 22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Product in search of a niche By R. H. Hardin UPDATE: After a few months sitting in the corner being charged, I tried it out today. Apparently there's at least one bad cell; a 600w load exhausts the batteries in about 45 seconds. So I revise my rating to ``piece of junk,'' niche or no niche. It needs a much better quality control on the batteries. ORIGINAL Post: Pros : about three times the run times of a comparable capacity UPS, based on battery capacity (3 x 17AH, vs typical 2 x 9AH in a 1500VA UPS). Maybe nice to have around

Useful, But Does Not Perform Up To Specifications By Scott If the Xantrex Xpower Powerpack Solar lived up to its specifications, I would rate it 5 stars and consider it well worth the money. That's why I bought it in the first place. Unfortunately, its performance falls short of the manufacturer's claims. The overall design of the product is very nice. I had considered building something similar based on a how-to article in Popular Science, but the Powerpack is so nicely packaged for only a couple dollars more, I chose to buy it. The Powerpack disappoints in the amount of energy stored in its battery that is available to power other electronic devices. The battery is specified as 12 volts and 10 amp-hours. As such, I was expecting to get as much as 120 watt-hours from it, but I barely get half that. As a test, I fully charged the battery using the included AC adapter. By "fully", I mean the unit claimed to be charged. I then ran the built-in LED lights. The manual claims they should run for 48 hours. They ran 27.5 hours for me. I assumed this performance reflected a bad unit and exchanged it. The new unit performs similarly. Either the battery in the unit performs poorly, or the electronics to monitor and control the battery state-of-charge are weak. As another example of the poor performance, I charged the unit completely (again based on its built-in indicator that charging is done). It indicated 100 percent charge when I turned on the AC or DC output, but as soon as I plugged in any load, it almost immediately dropped to 70 or even 60 percent. Soon after the unit's indicator dropped to 40 percent, the unit shut itself down. So, on the one hand, this is a nice unit to carry around, and it does slowly-but-surely charge the internal battery using the included 5 watt solar panel. It does a fine job charging cell phones and iPods, and a barely acceptable job charging a notebook computer. Compared to its specifications, and for that matter my previous experience with the Xantrex Powerpack Mobile Mini, however, the product is a disappointment. 187 of 189 people found the following review helpful. Looks better than it works By J. Gabrielli The product information should include these crucial tidbids, which you only find out AFTER buying (by reading the detailed owner's manual): 1) you cannot use it while you are charging it, and 2)if you want to charge it using the sun, it takes 45 HOURS (YES -- that's HOURS). I used it at an outdoor festival to power a laptop, and -- even thought the manual estimated it would last for up to 4 hours, it pooped out after 1.5 hours. After that, I unplugged and charged it in the sun for a while. It got a lot of interest from people at the festival, who thought it was cool. I think it's cool too. I just wish it worked better. 52 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Design nightmare By Snorkboy Many Cons - Battery not "user replaceable" (User manual recommends throwing the whole powerpack out when the battery can no longer take a charge) - If you do take the unit apart to replace the battery, it is an uncommon type not available at battery specialists. - Solar panel is too small to adequately charge the unit. Useful only as a top-up charger. - My unit has locked up twice, where the buttons and display do not work and you need to take it apart to disconnect then reconnect the battery to reboot the internal microcontroller. - Very difficult to take apart (to reboot the unit or change the battery). - AC power adapter puts out too much voltage, causing the unit to complain about an overvoltage situation when it is left plugged in when fully charged. - Loses its charge quickly when not plugged in. - LED lights on both sides of the unit are wired to come on at the same time. No switch to disconnect one bank to double the runtime as a light source. As a warning, if you do have one, do not leave it off its charger

These power packs give me both 12 Volt DC and 115 Volt AC. I keep them fully charged by plugging them in to the wall socket. As for choosing solar panels, If I could afford it (and I was many years younger) I might have purchased the much more expensive monocrystalline solar panels. They retain 80% of original efficiency after twenty five years of continuous use. By contrast, these much cheaper S-1116 briefcase panels will only last about five years of continuous use. Also, the monocrystalline panels are much more efficient and thus smaller while producing higher wattage. A nice portable monocrystalline briefcase is available at much higher cost. It is even somewhat weather proof. The S-1116 is not weather proof. If you want to set up a lifetime solar power source, buy monocrystalline solar panels. But, I assume you are only wanting a portable solar power source for emergencies. If so, I think this cheaper S-1116 is your best choice. It might also be a good choice considering that they do last five years - and the scientific community is continuously improving, and reducing cost of, everything electronic. All four of my panels tested better than advertised. Maybe I should have given the S-1116 five stars. 37 of 37 people found the following review helpful. S-1116 Amorphous Briefcase Solar Performance Numbers By Michael D. Zuteck I bought this unit as a low cost way to gain some hands on experience with solar panels, and for possible use to recharge my laptop computer after a hurricane power outage. Via digital voltmeter I found: Open circuit voltage: ~ 21.5 v Max charging current: 400 - 500 ma Both the voltage and current will vary somewhat depending on temperature and insolation - these values are for shirt sleeve temperature and good sky conditions. I've used it to recharge the battery on a motorcycle that's used infrequently, and leave it on the front dash of an Astro van that is also infrequently used. It adds charge in both cases, but at a half amp tops its not a fast way to do it. The unit is reasonably well built, and the supplied hookup cables are useful. For light duty or maintenance charging, it can do the job. If you want to deliver a more robust amount of power, a monocrystaline panel will deliver a lot more juice for the same physical size, whether its briefcase or regular panel. Bottom line - if you understand its limits, this product is a good way to mess around with solar power at a modest price. But it you want to generate more serious levels of power, look at the mono or poly crystaline alternatives. See all 2 customer reviews...

It takes about 8 hours to fully charge in good sunlight and about 12 hours in poor sunlight. It has proved extremely useful to use. Good Luck. 16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Solar generator By Karen Fronterhouse I bought this generator about 4 months ago. It was packaged well, took a little while to get here but was within reason. The responses to my e-mails were good. I do not know how to build a system myself so this was my best bet for the money at the time. Since I bought it, I have discovered that Home Depot now sells one for $400.00 less that you can add units on too as needed. This one you cannot add more power packs to it, according to the instructions. I followed the instructions and plugged it in to the wall for 3 days ( it was fully charged in less than one day)than ran it dry using a small fan and a table lamp with a 12 watt flourescent bulb in it. I ran the fan for two nights constant and the light just at night for about 4 hours each night. Just those two things ran it dry on power and it had to be recharged. When you plug it in the wall to charge it takes about 6 to 8 hours to fully charge. I did this 3 times like the instructions said, to condition the battery. I have not yet plugged it in to charge using the solar panel. I plan on using other items and marking down the drain time on them so I know what I can run and for how long should the need arise. We just had storms last week and were without power for almost five hours. We had a lamp and a fan going and felt rich. All our neighbors had were candles and flashlights. HMMMMM. So far so good. I like it. PS, I plugged a big box fan in to it on low speed and the fan started making noise. Went back to my 8" fan and all was fine. Even ran it on high speed. See all 4 customer reviews...

Innovative design from China, packaging needs help By HMMWV *Update* 6-2010, while my original panels are still running strong so long as I hose them down once a month, I've noticed that the PVC pipe provided to hold them in place has become brittle with sun exposure, hence I would now in 20/20 hindsight recommend a coat of Krylon Fusion Dover White Plastic Satin Spray Paint on the PVC parts to prevent UV cracking later in life. I do not think the Krylon Fusion product was available when I first setup my first panels but UV cracking of the support structure could cause panel damage in years 2 and 3. Meanwhile Amazon got their hands on some obsolete & discontinued Sharp panels (12.5% efficiency vs the new 13.1% efficiency) - if you are serious about needing lots of solar power in a small space, this is a big kit - you can view it here: Sunforce 39126 246-Watt High-Efficiency Polycrystalline Solar Power Kit My only concern about the kit is that due to the new panels being higher efficiency means it will be difficult to match panels if you find you still need more power later on. The other con on that system is it's price -- $1300+ but you get the wattage, along with a cheap charge controller and inverter, both of which could be upgraded for better system performance. It's just another solar system to consider in the $5/watt or less pricepoint for DIYers. Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong. I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels. I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up. Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them. No problems long term on a roof though! Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph "photograph" #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage. Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don't get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the photo notes. Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to! This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box. Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit. The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm. Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made. When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I'm in the northern hemisphere so we'll have to wait and see. Basically an MPPT charger won't gain but a few watts with this panel so it's not a good investment unless you already have one laying around. (Begin original review after buying panels) I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort. I'd give it

Amazon.com Product Review The XPower Powerpack 1500 is a portable power system that produces household electricity for products rated at 1500 watts or less. A clean and quiet alternative to a generator, the XPower Powerpack integrates a 60 Amp/hour AGM battery with a 1500-watt inverter and produces a 3000-watt surge. This system is built to run a range of appliances such as a standard size refrigerator and microwave oven, and office equipment such as a computer, monitor, and fax machine. The XPower Powerpack 1500 is designed for ultimate portability. See the product specifications. View the generator in greater detail. A convenient design feature allows for easy set-up of the cart. View larger. The XPower Powerpack 1500 consists of a battery pack that stores electrical energy, state-of-the-art electronics that convert 12 volts from the battery pack to household power, an AC power panel that contains two standard outlets, and a DC power panel that is used to run 12 volt products. These components are packaged into a rugged "cart" with a removable waist handle that allows XPower Powerpack 1500 to be wheeled from room-to-room or outdoors over rough terrain. An excellent alternative to a generator, the XPower Powerpack produces no noise or fumes and has no moving parts. With the accessories provided, you can easily recharge the XPower Powerpack using standard utility power from your wall outlet, your vehicle, or from a solar panel. The XPower Powerpack can be used to produce power for numerous applications. For power emergencies it can run essential appliances like refrigerators, cordless/mobile phones, radios, fireplace fans, table lamps, or microwaves. For work sites, you can power your drills, belt sanders, circular saws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, vacuums, computers, large monitors, fax machines, and inkjet printers. For plain old fun, you can use the power source to run blenders, video games, TV and VCRs, satellite equipment, coffee makers, portable coolers and more. The XPower Powerpack features a built-in 1500 watt inverter and sealed, non-spillable 60 Amp-hour AGM battery. Dual AC outlets allow operation of multiple products, and a built-in battery level indicator confirms the charge level. A high surge protection and automatic over-temperature and overload shutdown keeps the Powerpack running safely and efficiently, while a low voltage alarm and shutdown prevents deep battery discharge. You can recharge the Powerpack from home (up to 15 hours), or your vehicle (6 to 8 hours). A padded grip towing handle removes easily for storage in tight places, and built-in handles on sides allow for easy lifting. The XPower Powerpack measures 14.8 x 15.6 x 12.3 inches (HxWxD), weighs 60 pounds, and is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

Powers a large Karaoke machine for five+ hours By RicR2 I needed a powerful but sealed power-pack (sealed battery + converter) for poolside use, to power a large 110-volt karaoke machine for five hours a day. The Xatrex 1500 is the only power-pack I've found that meets this requirement. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the wheels have rubber rather than (noisy) plastic treads. The first 1500 stopped working with a bang after two hours. When I phoned the Xantrex company, the technician I soon was talking to quickly concluded that my 1500 had malfunctioned and recommended that I return it. I was pleased with this candor. The second 1500 has worked for about a month now. Not obvious is that the 1500 has a small storage cabinet, in which I store an extension cord. Both 1500s arrived undamaged. A disclaimer is that I bought my 1500s from costo-dot-comm, which is relevant because perhaps Costco uses different packaging for shipping. The "large karaoke machine" is a MegaStar CM-K1100, and its average draw has been 30-something watts. 9/18/06 Update: Around July the charge time dropped to under four hours. When I called Xantrex, the technician told me that battery life is about 200 charges. 100 of 102 people found the following review helpful. Good all-in-one package By A Customer The Xpower 1500 is a good backup system as it has eveything you need in a convenient handtruck (the batteries are heavy).Unfortunately the 61 Amphr batteries don't last that long. Adding a 100Ahr battery which you can easily be connected to the xPower make for a nice system which will get you thru a few days of blackout. 150 of 157 people found the following review helpful. Badly damaged once again. By BWW I previously ordered two of these units and wrote a review. Both were badly damaged, but one was salvagable. The other I had to return, after it overheated and emitted a noxious odor. I decided to take a chance and order another unit this month (goal was to have total of two working units), hoping that whatever warehouse or shipping issues that resulted in previous damage had been resolved. They weren't. This unit also came with crushed top and wheels. Until the manufacturer comes up with a better way to ship these heavy beasts, not worth it. See all 54 customer reviews...

Colonna This little device arrived in excellent condition and easy to follow instructions. You just plug something that runs on electricity into it and turn it on. It's that simple and ready for use out of the box. I can run my laptop just under four hours at night or all day with the solar panel sitting in the sun. We could take this anywhere, like camping or to the park. It's lightweight yet sturdy and well constructed. I like to keep it around the house for emergencies. It doesn't power big devices like a refrigerator but a small TV, ceramic heater, a lamp, coffee maker, anything that size works great. It also powers 12 volt items like some shop lamps and the included USB adapter via a standard cigarette lighter plug. Devices powered by 12V use less battery and do not require the in the inverter to run, increasing the run time significantly. There are many choices on the market and this was the best value. If you want a renewable portable power system this is the one to get. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It has two outlets for AC devices and comes in a sturdy carrying case. Perigee Power Solutions seems like a very reliable company. They bench test and inspect all of their devices before shipping them. The product also comes with instructions, care procedures, and a list of many devices that can be run off of it. The solar power that is provided in this is kit is lightweight, weatherproof, and very effective. I highly recommend this or any of Perigee's products. See all 2 customer reviews...
