We've known that we would need a generator, but waited awhile because there is so much sun in southern Arizona. I had a long time to research generators and to evaluate our needs. We only need a generator to get us through rare times when it's too cloudy to produce enough power from the solar panels. And of course, there's the chance that something will fail in the solar equipment.I had originally planned on spending $6000 on a generator. Looking at our actual needs overtime I came to realize that 8KW would easily power not only our daily needs, but would also easily recharge the battery bank on cloudy days. After revising my needs I discovered the Generac 5882. The price was amazing and the specs looked perfect for us. I had a few questions and contacted the people at Generac. They were extremely helpful answering question and proving a kit so our solar equipment can turn on and off the generator as needed.Along the way I learned that in our off-grid situation we did not need a transfer switch. Our inverter acts as a transfer switch and also balances the power from the generator between the house and recharging the batteries.The installation was very easy, We did everything ourselves. Running the gas line was easy as we had pre-plumbed for the generator and only had to add a couple feet of pipe and connect the hose that came with the generator. Wiring was easy too. You have to hook up two power wires and a neutral. I discovered that you also have to run one line of AC back to the generator so that it can keep the battery charged. (And yes, you have to buy a car battery and install it -- this too is easy.)Inside the generator there's a display panel that comes off with an allen wrench and exposes all the wiring. There is plenty of room to work and everything is clearly marked.At first I hesitated to buy the generator because of a short and I decided baseless review that claimed it was cheap and had cheap parts. I'd like to know their credentials. To me, the unit seems sturdy; everything fits together tight; it looks attractive; it's easy to work on. The unit is quieter than I expected. Generac 5882 8 kW By GFlory While the generator is working well and is just what I wanted, this model comes without the transfer switch. Unfortunately, the installation manual provides no instructions for installing a generator without their transfer switch. I have a mechanical transfer switch from a previous generator, and I chose to use my existing setup. The necessary wiring of this generator (model 5882) can only be discerned from study of the provided generator schematics and other transfer switch schematics which Generac has available on their website. Fortunately, with and electrical engineering background, I was able to figure out how to wire the generator. I suppose one could get instructions by calling the manufacturer, but that isn't a good substitute for a few paragraphs to describe some basic installation requirements for a simple manual operation.So, while I am happy with the generator and definitely want it without the automatic transfer switch, I feel Generac is derelict in not providing support for this type of installation. 6 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Meynard I use the Sunforce 10 amp controller with a Sunforce solar panel to charge and maintain the battery on my hunting camper. We do not have commercial power available and don't want to carry a generator for a short weekend. The controller is working fine. This is the second one I have had on there. The first had a faulty digital readout screen. I had a 7 amp Sunforce, but it seemed to allow leakage overnight. This one will charge the battery up to 12.8 Volts, but apparently no more, whereas the promo says it will do 14 Volts, then maintain. It has not brought the battery up to a maintenance level as yet, but it does bring the battery back up to better than 12 Volts rather quickly after an evening of using the lights and light appliances like the furnace fan. All in all, I am satisfied with this product. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Compact and reliable. By M. Mcnam This Sunforce charge controller was bought as a component for my solar generator and at first, I wasn't sure it was going to work because other charge controllers are more expensive and this one had 10amps. Turns out i had nothing to worry about because the Sunforce can handle my 12 volt system. I was able to mount it straight to the battery box with some nuts and bolts and the fittings that go to the battery were exactly the size I needed.. I'm using n 80W micro-crystalline panel and so far, the controller is delivering a steady and fast charge to my battery. My 110 amphour battery gets charged back from 25% to 100% in about 6 hours. The indicator lights are easy to read and the liquid crystal voltage readout is accurate. The readout only uses 10ma which is good because it stays on all the time.Here's the fun part. We made a modification on the connections by using a 15 amp 125-Volt 2-Pole Polarized Light-Duty Plug on the panel, and a 15 amp 125-Volt Light-Duty Plug on the controller's input wires. This makes it a snap, literally, to hook up and unhook the generator box from the solar panel so I can roll it inside the house.Very pleased with this product as I'm sure you will be. 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Sunforce 10 Amp. Charge Controller By Dreamer Interesting little device. Voltmeter is .22 VDC high, no adjustment available. Sample time for DVM is a little slow. Using to keep 100 A/Hr battery "topped off" with two solar panels. Max charging current so far is around 4 Amps which the unit handles very well, no apparent heating, no electrical noise generated. Have it diode isolated and in parallel with AC charger and they both are functioning nicely. Only thing to change would be a terminal strip vs. wires included and adjustment for DVM. Sunforce solar hanging LED light By Abby Cord from solar panel to ceiling fixture is 9' long, with an L shaped plug, so if you're going to drill a hole for it, it will need to be larger than the wire. The ceiling fixture is not shown in the pictures, but it's fairly small and comes with the screws (4) to mount it. The panel does not need to be plugged in for the light to work. All parts are black.There are 4 LED bulbs that are surprisingly bright. They are housed under a heavy glass dome that you twist off to get at the switch. The switch comes set to the OFF position. Set it to LIGHT for on at dusk/off at dawn, or to ON for indoor use which is only activated by the remote control. The remote is a single button. For indoor, click once for low light, once more for bright light,and once more to turn it back off. In outdoor mode, the light defaults to low light, and each click of the remote alternates the light between low and high. The remote has to be aimed at the ceiling fixture, not the light.The solar panel tilts and swivels. You have to attach it to the base with a small Phillips head screw, included. I have the panel sitting in a south facing window, but it also comes with mounting hardware.The bottom rim of the light hangs 30" from the ceiling when mounted. The chain has a clip on each end so you can shorten it if you like.I'm very pleased with the amount of light this puts out - the bright light is enough to read under it. The spread of light is also good - I held it up in my 14x15 living room and it lit the whole room. I have not tested it yet to see how long it will stay on, but I read a review elsewhere that said 10 hours, probably on the low light setting. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Works well in shed application, but kludgy installation By Ross Tracy My 16x10 shed (8ft ceiling, it's large and dark) needed some light, it sits about 40 ft from the house and I haven't yet been able to get electricity out there, so I picked up this light after looking at a few others. The features I liked were the LED light, solar powered, and most importantly, switchable on/off. The solar panel installation was a little kludgy, though. The instructions were not too detailed, but I couldn't figure out how the included metal bar came into the picture (possible I didn't need it for my application). The included screws for the solar panel were insufficient, in my opinion, very thin and short. This thing is going on the side peak of the shed roof, it needs to stay there!In any case, I drilled a hole through the shed to the inside, and I had to make it a 3/4" hole because the plug that goes to the top hanger of the light from the solar panel is "L"-shaped and wouldn't fit through anything smaller, so I had to fill in quite a hole. The hanger screws were a bit cheesy, they both stripped easily (yes, with the right sized bit) and were difficult to remove because of the way they fit into the hanger plastic.If you're handy enough, these things are pretty minor, overall the light works well and is bright enough for the large shed. It's switchable with the included remote (which I hung inside next to the door) and has two brightness settings. There is no problem with that part. The problem is the booklet that comes with the generator. It keeps the generator from getting 5 stars. It's obvious that it is poorly translated from another language. The booklet states to fill the oil reservoir with oil before starting. There is nothing telling me what type or weight oil to use. There is a service number to call but it is hard to get help. Otherwise this is a good product for emergent use. Overall, an excellent buy. Best portable solar solution on the market By Ernest Mayer I have purchased, used and tested every lightweight solar charging device on the market that I could find. The Goal0 nomad 7 and Guide 10 set is the only one that works sufficiently that I can be completely off the grid with my backpacking devices and have no need for extra batteries. See below for solar panels tested. I have been testing portable solar panels for several years now, and the Goal 0 products are the best. The Nomad 7 is the only solar panel that has the capability to charge an adequate battery pack, my headlamp AAA's, AND my smartphone/GPS all in the same day in full sunlight. It is the only panel that has reserve capacity to charge my devices in less than full sun (shady/cloudy). No other panel has the output of the Nomad 7. Its closest competitor is the Brunton panel. The Brunton weighs 20% more and is rated to output 30% less than the Nomad 7 (Brunton = 5 watts, Nomad 7 = 7 watts). In my testing the lower output was verified. The off-axis performance of the Nomad 7 is superior. It maintains full output to a greater angle of sun than any other panel I have tested. The Nomad 7 is the only panel, in my knowledge, that uses the more efficient mono-crystalline panels. It does seem to give it an edge in real-world usage. As far as flexibility, that characteristic has nothing to do with panel efficiency. Another of the well-thought out features of the Nomad 7 is the connection options. The Xpal SP-2000 and the Solio both rely on many different tips to connect to different devices. The Nomad 7 has three great options built in: 6.5 volt fast charge for the Guide 10 charger, 5 V USB connector, and a port that the included 12V female car lighter adapter plugs into. Every portable device has the option of an inexpensive car power adapter, and the Nomad 7 nicely offers that ability. The Guide 10 charger works to its rated specifications, unlike most of the other solar devices I have used. It charges AA and AAA batteries. It charges them faster with the Nomad 7 than any other solar panel/charger combination that I have tested. The Goal 0 batteries that ship with the Guide 10 are the best of their type I have tested. They are low-discharge, like the Eneloops, but much better. The Eneloops are rated at 2000 mAh, but charge only to about 1900 mAh capacity. The Goal 0 are rated at 2000 mAh, but charge to 2200 mAh. The guide 10 has some very well thought out features, including the LED flashlight, the function switch and the built-in hanging loop. These touches all demonstrate that the designers are users, and thought well about how these devices would be used. All is not perfect, though. The Guide 10 does have an overheating problem, but only in very strong sunlight and under certain conditions. This is a known issue that is being fixed as I write this. This brings me to one of my most important experiences; customer service. Goal 0 has the best customer service by far than any other of the solar panel manufacturers I have tested in this group. Immediate phone contact, responsiveness to questions and warranty service are far and away some of the best I have experienced. Following is a list of the solar panels I have tested, and short comparison comments on each.1. Powerfilm USB + AA: This one has a great form factor, is flexible and very durable, and is the lightest weight and most compact of all the solar chargers. Its fatal flaw is that it simply does not put out enough power to be practical in extended backpacking. It does not fully charge the AA batteries when it indicates a full charge, and is not nearly as flexible as the Nomad 7 for connection. May not be the panel for you By gehj66 I purchased the Coleman 36 Watt folding solar panel (manufactured by Sun Force) to take camping, planning on charging the battery for my pop up camper. My review is based on very limited use as it arrived twice from Amazon damaged due to inadequate shipping and product packing, after the second time I returned it for a refund. The fetchers that attracted me to this product was the folding in half for storage and travel, the adjustable stand to allow for maximum sun exposure and it included everything necessary to set up and start using. The not so good fetchers were the weight, at 30 pounds it is not the easiest to maneuver and set up. The included stand worked but is not the best design; it doesn't stay together well, takes a bit of work to adjust and is not made to move once set up. The first panel I received was damaged; the face of the panel was shattered in one of the corners, however before noticing this I had it fully assembled set up and charging my camper battery. Installation was easy with the quick connect accessories supplied. In about 30 minutes it was, I thought working fine. After setting in the sun I noticed the damage and then tested the panel with the included testing light and found that the damaged panel was not producing a current. After sending it back and receiving a new panel, it also was damaged during shipping. After receiving this product damaged twice I decided that it may not be the best panel to use for camping. If it couldn't make the shipping trip without damage I didn't think it would do any better on a camping trip with less protection. It looked like any minor impact on one of the corners was enough to shatter and crack the face of the panel. I'm sure I can find a lighter more durable panel to do the job. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Easy, works, excellent price By Jack Stone I just got this product a few days ago but here is what I can add to the other reviews: Does as advertised, easy to use, comes with all necessary connectors (great deal in fact because the same connectors sell separately for $18-$19). Word of warning because some people are really picky about this: the metal tilt arms are non-adjustable; not a problem for me but might be for other people. The panels are compact and make for easy storage (great for camping) I inspected my order when I received it and I did not notice any cracks on the panels and both are putting out a charge (have no idea what because I don't have that kind of equipment) Overall it seems to work well. For the price asked I don't think you'll find a better one. (also as a side note: Sunforce makes the Coleman model in addition to one of its own that looks exactly the same, the difference? I have used it four or five days a week, six or eight hours per day, on average to use a heating pad on my back, run a large boom box to play cassette tapes, recharge cell phones and PDAs at various times. The fan noise that others mention was never a problem because the truck is quite loud, but I never had trouble with overheating or overloading like I did with smaller inverters with no fan. By HueyII Bought this, plugged in my iPod and as long as the iPod was powered off, while in the strong sun, it provided trickle charge. When i tried to charge with power on it would not charge at all and the battery was drained. Not what I expected.Update: I tried recharging my laptop and it works but power must be off. I was also able to charge my iPad but only with power off.I guess this will work on most gadgets as long as the power is off. I am curious whether I should get a voltage regulator. I would just tape it up just to avoid blowing out your precious USB powered electronics.Of course, I have this hooked up to a 12V battery and a quality inverter. This panel is fine for maintaining one or two 12V batteries at full charge. This product is a simple plug n play solar power kit. It comes with everything you need for portable power and all you have to do is plug the panel into the batterybox via 2 mc4 conectors that are male and female making it simple and quick. The package comes with a brand new 85 watt solar panel, brand new 30 ft of wire, and a xantrex xpower 1500. The xantrex xpower is brand new but, I have added a 7amp charge contoller and mc4 conectors inside the batterybox and I test it before repackaging to make sure everything is working. The 30 ft of wire make it easy to put the panel in the sun and the battery where you need it. Works great for remote areas without grid power, emergencies, camping, or whatever you need power for. The charge controller that you plug the wires from the panel into is built into the batterybox so even though you do not see it, it is working. The charge contoller has a built in diode so when the sun goes down, it goes down with it and does not drain your battery at night. The battery and the panel will ship seperately and may not arive on the same day. When you get the batterybox out of the box simply locate the 2 mc4 conectors in the back and plug your 30 ft of wire into the conectors, then conect the other end of the wire into the mc4 conectors on you panel and you are charging. Sorry not orders to Hawaii or Alaska.

Started out great then at exactly 20 hours the engine blew. Talking with the Vendor has been difficult, no resolution as yet. Could be stuck with a piece of junk. By Allan Arthur The product arrived promptly and in good condition.I bought this in order to run the refrigerator and freezer during power outages and to run 120 volt gardening equipment (weed whacker, hedge clipper) without having to run a long extension cord. It is very difficult for me to start gas powered equipment and I need to take frequent breaks.I get plenty of run time using my lawn tractor battery. For refrigeration, I parked a car outside the window, connected the inverter, and left the engine running. Plugging in the refrigerator (only 300 watts) tripped the low battery voltage protection, but I was able to reset and run the refrigerator.Like virtually all inverters and some generators, it produces a "modified sine wave." Everything I have plugged in has worked, except for 2 UPS units. I use uninterruptable power supplies on my sattelite DVR and on my computer. Instead of just pulling the plug from the wall and plugging into the inverter, I had to unplug from the UPS and plug the units directly into the inverter.The battery cables supplied seem flimsy. Ring terminals are used to attach to the inverter. The inverter's terminals are spaced close together, which could be a problem with heavier wire with larger terminals. I had to tape the wire and terminals because copper was showing and strain relief is needed.You might think a generator would be a better choice, but it needs to be started periodically, fuel can go stale, and you need to guard against carbon monoxide. Manual starting is a problem for me, so an inverter is a better solution.The bottom line: It does the job. I use it strictly for convenience rather than fuss with a generator in bad weather, keeping it in good working order, etc. I can run everything I need for about 8-10 hours with two deep cycle batteries hooked in parallel. That may sound like a hassle all its own, and it was setting it up. I have the batteries hardwired together in my office out of sight. I have the inverter hardwired to the battery so when the power goes out all I have to do is run an extension cord to my living room where my computer and TV are and turn on the inverter. I can do that in two minutes. I also have a UPS, which gives me about 40 minutes before I even need to do that. Getting a generator up and running is going to take a lot longer than that.Overall, this product is amazing for the price. You should look up the difference between modified sine wave and true sine wave if you have any specialty electronics that you need to back up. You would need to do that with a generator as well. True sine wave is going to set you back quite a bit. Modified sine wave works fine for most household electronics. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Tripp This baby charges up the 8 volt battery in my 1949 international tractorparked out in the orchard quite well. I even ran over it with an empty trailer, and left it out in the rain! I can use large metal spring clamps to hang it anywhere to catch the afternoon sun. Haven't tried it camping yet. 47 of 51 people found the following review helpful. Saved Us in the Forest By Joey Rush I often go Gold & Gemstone hunting and use quite a bit of 12volt equipment, including a forgotten 12v cooler plugged into the dash. Upon leaving the car for a day to prospect a small stream, the cooler drained our battery dead. We returned with only about 2 hours of daylight left, found the battery dead and I immediately removed the charger from my backpack and began charging the battery with direct sunlight. As the sun was setting we "tried it" and there was just enough charge to start us up and we drove the 12 miles out of the forest instead of having to walk it out for help.Not only does the product work, but it has changed the way I think about solar energy. Excellent By Thankful I bought one of these about three years ago. I put it on the dashboard of my pickup to keep the battery charged, as the truck did a lot of sitting in the driveway. It worked fine for at least a year. Actually I don't know how long it worked. One day, just on a lark, I put a multimeter on it to see if it was still working, and found that it wasn't putting out 12 volts. After almost two years since I bought it, I sent it back to Sunforce (in Canada) and they sent me a brand new one! I've since had the new one installed in the truck for over a year. Just checked it yesterday and it's still cranking out the volts. I have it wired directly to the battery, as my Toyota pickup cigar lighter outlet isn't active unless the ignition is on.I am buying another one for backpacking to run a AA battery charger and keep GPS battery charged. Because it's so lightweight, it should be very good for this purpose.Nice of them to send me another one after nearly two years!When I got the first one I checked to see if it would run a small AM/FM/SW radio without batteries.
