It can power microwave and hairdryer or coffee maker at the same time. Very configurable, need the scp control panel. It can even power up my 13000 btu air conditioner in my RV, no issue. Charges my dual 12V batteries very quickly, just a super nice machine. I think inverters like this should be standard install in RVs, makes life so nice. If I needed a backup system anywhere else, this is the 1st unit I would look at. I'm very impressed with the quality of this unit, just note it's pretty heavy, that's a good sign of low frequency switching components. No cheap design like other high speed switching inverter. This unit powers the wattage it advertises while other units advertise similar wattage at cheaper price but they always seem to fall short. Just an amazing unit and you can tell this company put together high quality standards for this model. Also sine wave produced must be close to perfect AC, I've had no issues powering any electrical equipment, TVs, computers, audio equipment, etc. Now I'm thinking to see if I can stash another battery somewhere so I can last longer between charges on my generator. I have not found anything this unit cannot power up, just like having AC outlet at home off the grid. I think all cars should have 1000W unit preinstalled with quality units like this and just have AC outlets to plug in Anything you want. nothing more annoying than buying lower quality units that just shut off right when you need them I can't wait to see if they put out a higher rated unit for use as a home backup system. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. When I called about this I was told they don't send one because they don't know what length you want. A cable is required to used the display and the display is required to setup the inverter. By Tim I originally bought this to power a 1000 W immersion heater, but the heater apparently pulls more like 1200 W. This inverter would trip almost immediately upon turning on the immersion heater. Excellent Inverter, but not for powering UPS By Lorenzo This DC/AC inverter is extremely well built and very quiet, even when the thermal-control fan is running. The terminals on the back are heavy-duty and come with washers and nuts. I was planning to power my computer and satellite modem on my farm by connecting my existing APC UPS to this inverter, but for some reason the fault LED lights up and the inverter shuts down. Another reviewer mentioned this problem already, explaining it was because of the modified sine-wave technology. There are smaller and bigger versions of this inverter on Amazon (mostly under the Xantrex brand, which manufactures it for Duracell), so it is easy to choose according to one's needs (in my case, 1000W is a huge overkill for the computer gear only, but I may be able to power a large LCD monitor or a TV in the future). By Martin Anderson This is basically a standard UPS with three exceptions. First, it is not intended for use on computers and thus does not have a USB connector to tell your computer to shut down when the power goes out. Second, and most importantly, its battery capacity is about 6 times that of a standard UPS. For instance, the Tripplite 700 UPS has a 7aH battery, which will provide 400 watts of power for about 7 minutes. This unit has 2 20aH batteries, for a total of 40aH, and should provide 400 watts for about 35 minutes. My big screen, Onkyo surround system, and satellite dish draw about 200 watts, so in an outage, I can probably watch TV for an hour. If my PVR alone is left on, it can run for 5 hours or longer. Ideal for RV, greatly reduces generator usage By EQReader I live off-grid, in an RV. I run the generator to recharge a 300aH bank of batteries for the 12v systems in the RV. But even the smallest, most efficient generator still supplies more power than I need. With the excess power I charge several of these Xantrex PowerSources. They then give me back the AC power I need when the generator is off. I use them to power my internet connection, laptop, cell phone recharges, watching TV/DVD, etc. As for usage... I have a 26" standard TV w/DVD, and I can watch a DVD for 3 hours or so. My wireless internet dish only draws about 5 watts, and I can keep it powered for days. If you are looking to power just a laptop and cell phone, for 8 hours a day, you could probably last two days with one unit. These batteries should not be discharged down to more than 50%, and the unit will beep loudly and eventually shut off power, so you don't get the full use of 400 watts overall, it's more like 240. You also don't really get 400 watts at once, count on only plugging in 300 watts worth of stuff at a time. Even so, given the price per amp-hour of AGM batteries, this UPS is still an incredible deal, just in battery value alone--and a much better deal considering portability (luggable, but not too bad), and the included inverter and drawdown info. Very easy to use, the readouts on both my units have always worked fine and any beeping that does happen is appropriate and helpful. Family friendly, and relatively idiot-proof. Once I explained how they worked, others who have stayed in my trailer have found them easy to operate and difficult to damage. By Carl Morris This is an early review in that I have not had to witness a lengthy power outage to determine its run-time, but from initial experience it seems to run as expected. Some things I do want to pass on to other people, is that this UPS is like most others, even though its from an inverter specialist, and will not operate on an existing modified sine-wave inverter. This won't bother most people however. Others should just note that it is very large as is needed for the run-time it is able to offer, and weighs a good amount too. It does not have a continous audible alarm when operating in backup mode. The documentation states it is a modified sine wave inverter, however I have not checked to see what the exact output looks like. I don't have any delicate equipment connected, so I cannot know if it would cause buzzing from audio equipment or picture distortion in video equipment. If you require a long run-time from a quiet back-up system this is an ideal solution. Kocur This is a superior product in every category - design, finish, and performance. The manual is a model of clarity, and install and setup went without a hitch. Mounting the unit, due to the weight, posed a problem, but only because I installed it in a closet, so had to mount a winch temporarily, as the otherwise required number of people could not fit in the install space. By Omni I use this inverter for powering power tools on construction jobs. It has taken the place of an 1800 watt gas generator. Wish I made the switch years ago. This inverter easily powers large 1/2" electric drills and most any other power tools without any problem at all. Setup quick connects, also available on Amazon, to my truck battery. All the other contractors are also amazed. Never again will I use a heavy smelly generator. The unit is lightweight, easily moved to different trucks with quick connects (non included). Its a little bulky and may not readily fit in a standard pickup truck conveniently. However with the quick connects comming through the grill it can just be placed on the ground and used just like you would a portable generator, although it isn't weather proof so it would have to be protected from rain. Possibly behind the front seat. Mine is mounted in between the front seats of a Ford E-250 work van. Fits nicely there and is also used to charge all the cordless tool batteries. If all you needed was to charge cordless batteries a much smaller unit would be fine. But this 3500 will power anything you can plug into it. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Solid and reliable generator By Steve This review relates to the European version of this generator which runs slower than the US version (50Hz, not 60Hz). I bought one of these for a remote farm where the electricity supply is variable, subject to brown outs and occasional outages. My barn has no power and during harvest we work late into the night. We have also had to live in a workshop attached to the barn during renovation of the farm house, so needed an electricity supply there. So the generator has been used both intermittently and running for extended periods of 8-10 hours. The generator worked flawlessly, it can be set to autostart if required. All operations can be controlled from the key pad and it is extremely easy to operate. The output is sufficient to run a whole house and is of better quality than the electricity feed from my supplier. I ran computers, network equipment including large servers, microwave and conventional ovens, heaters, water heaters and workshop equipment. Servicing is simple and the generator tracks engine hours ensuring servicing is done to schedule. The only negative that I could find is that at 72-77dBA it is noisy in remote locations. I expected better from this company By Tom and Marie Brandt I owned the Black and Decker PI400AB 400 watt model for about 10 days and had enough. The soft touch switch never allowed the unit to turn on with anything plugged in (even if turned off with no load), so I had to unplug everything and restart, replug and then pray to the gods of mobile power that the "smart" switch would allow the unit to send power to my laptop. ugggh! Then even if it was deemed acceptable by the unit to send power to the small load I asking of it, usually just one Dell XPS1330 laptop which draws a whopping 60 watts on startup and 40 watts during runtime, the fan that cools this ridiculous unit was slightly louder than the USAir turboprop shuttle airplane that I am sitting on right now writing this review. Seriously though, the fan was louder than my vehicle fan on high defrost and never turned off even if there was the slightest load of power called for. My family literally begged me to turn the thing off and therefore end the movie they were watching on DVD because the noise was unbearable. Of course, the overambitious fan is probably a safeguard to prevent the unit from melting it's cheap plastic case into an unidentifiable plastic briquette. No need to use aluminum like Cobra and Vector do, to name a few when plastic works just fine...uggggh (again). BTW, the Cobra CPI 450 is aluminum, quieter and less expensive than the B&D and is a far, far better unit than this piece of junk. Also I have owned smaller 175W Vectors with aluminum cases which were also good, but don't know about their current models. All I'm saying is do yourself a favor and avoid this unit, there are far better options out there. 10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Does the job with some noise. By Jay This inverter powered my MacBook Pro which draws 85 watts using the power plug in a box truck I rented. The plug tag and inverter label read up to 80 watts while the manual states up to 100 watts for the plug. The heavier gauge alligator clip cables are for higher wattage applications or you may blow your power port fuse. The alligator clips connect directly to the battery. If you permanently hardwire the inverter buy 6 gauge wire with a 50 amp fuse up to 6 feet long or 4 gauge wire over 6 feet. Both included cables are 3 feet (91 cm) long. Remember, Volts x Amps = Watts. The inverter draws 512 watts when output is 400 watts according to the label. Output is a stepped modified sine wave and NOT sinusoidal. When the inverter fan comes on it is noticeable like a radio between stations at moderate volume (took me some miles before figuring it was the inverter). The housing stayed cool at 85 watts. When Black & Decker fixes their dead links the manual may be available at [..] (search for PI400AB). Lowes and Home Depot were [..]for this inverter. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not good, do not use unloaded. By Doug Deep I can get this inverter to work in my cigarette lighter, just don't plug it in and turn it on without something (laptop,etc) hooked into the AC outlet and powered on. When this inverter turns on, unloaded, it draws a huge spike in current and will blow the fuse to your cigarette lighter immediately. Not fun when your radio runs on the same fuse! Easy to use for anyone. Quick... It is fast and simple. Check out your entire charging system. All 12 volt batteries have 12.6 Volts If you have any less than 12.6 volts your battery needs charging. Check that battery charger you use to charge it too! In two seconds you will see how much your charger, or Charging system is charging the battery. A good Charging system should be putting out 13.8 to 14.2 volts. Your battery charger will put out more on high, so don't let the battery get too warm. I like charging my batteries on low. Just a word to the wise... The average life of any battery is 3 years. As soon as you see the white corrosion on the battery cable, you battery is on its way out. Oh sure you can milk it along for a year or two, maybe. But... you are ruining your alternator and battery cables and when that bad boy starts to crank slow you are ruining the starter. How much do you think a positive battery cable costs on a new car? Some are well over 200.00 from the dealer plus labor. These are just my thoughts after 30 years in the automotive business...
